Our Approach

Tru Recovery Support Services was founded in 2020 by Carl Boone, a long-time recovery advocate committed to growing effective recovery support systems. His approach to work is to address the person, while supporting their distinct needs. He and Tru Staff are knowledgeable of DC resources and treatment options available so persons in recovery make informed choices about their care. We are a Recovery Support Service offered to individuals in need of life skill improvement. We also consult with private and public entities to help identify gaps in service by outlining the core reasons for gaps. We then assist in developing resolutions to bridge gaps, strengthen communication, and develop better workforce accountability.

MISSION - TRU Recovery empowers individuals and organizations who desire to increase the quality of their lives and their professional existence. We believe that people are the most important commodity on earth and that foundational change must occur one person at a time. Intrapersonal relationship building, training, and recovery support services are the central focus of our work. We will model and build our relationship with those we serve on a foundation of love, truthfulness, mindfulness and selfless service. We believe this is the true essence of life and that all forms of happiness, after this, are simply shadows.

VALUES - Tru Recovery Support exists to aid in the recovery journey. We achieve this through partnership, advocacy, and education. At Tru Recovery Support, we believe each person is unique, has specific needs, and should have choice through all levels of care. We promote healthy recovery by eliciting the goals of persons in recovery and using that to drive a workable treatment plan, which, we hope, lasts beyond our services.

TRU PERSON APPROACH:

Essential Life Skills:

At Tru Recovery Support Services, we recognize life skills as critical to recovery, as they enable persons to keep their recovery while managing life challenges. Such skills include time management, the practice of self-care, assertive communication, and the practice of building health relationships. To us, successful recovery is based on an ability to not only live substance-free, but to manage challenges. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in, which sets persons up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Motivational Interviewing:

At Tru Recovery Support Services, we see Motivational Interviewing (MI) as a tool for helping persons shift behaviors to support recovery. MI is goal-oriented, and on our team, counselors utilize it to first help persons consider their behavior. Then, ideally, to help persons resolve ambivalence about making healthy choices. We also tailor MI strategies to the persons state of readiness for change.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy:

At Tru Recovery Support Services, we utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to illustrate the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Because this approach helps persons grow self-awareness, we use it to foster healthy responses to thoughts and feelings. CBT has also been proven to help people manage stress without engaging in substance abuse.

Coping Skills Therapy:

At Tru Recovery Support Services, we see coping skills as a pillar of recovery, and strategy for relapse prevention. Our goal is to offer tools to help persons manage difficult emotions and reduce external/internal stress. We achieve this by assessing the persons recognition of their current coping skills, and imparting skills we’ve come to know as effective, like deep breathing exercises, journaling, and connecting with positive friends/family. The importance of coping skills is addressed in all service settings.
